WARNING: The paid signature collectors that are gathering signatures in Phoenix to “save firefighter and police pensions” do NOT represent us. They are gathering signatures for a proposed initiative by the name of “Responsible Budgets Act” a rather anonymous and vague proposed city charter amendment that is attempting to obtain enough signatures to reach a vote.
There is likely a very good reason that the average person cant find a copy of the actual initiative on the internet and the bland Responsible Budgets website doesn’t even have a link to it either. When one actually reads it, they realize it is a vague and poorly written proposal that will place unreasonable financial constraints on the city and hamstring it’s ability to run itself. It’s implementation would likely result in profound cuts to city services.
Whereas we wholeheartedly support the concept of responsible governing and aggressively paying down pension liabilities, there are right and wrong ways of going about it. This measure is concerning on many levels, not the least of which using first responders as leverage without offering an accurate depiction of what this initiative will actually do.
Please exercise extreme caution when approached by these paid signature gatherers and know that there is much, much more to the “Responsible Budgets Act” than what they claim.
